Navajo Pueblo Indian Sandpainting

12x12 inches round (Tablet)

12x13 inches (Tablet + Stand)

Laser etched sandpainting into black stone slate.  The Navajo American Indians were known for their famous ancient sand art.  Traditionally meticulously designed by various colored sand in a clenched fist spread upon the ground in detailed symbols and images - often very geometric along with depictions of the four elements, four directions and four sacred plants (corn, beans, squash and gourds).  The artist may also sit in the middle of the sandpainting to enhance its absorption of healing powers.  After the ritual, the sandpainting is destroyed and sand returned back to the Earth.  Sandpaintings are just one rite in the healing ceremony where Earth People and Holy People come into harmony and are "places where the gods come and go" in the Navajo language. They are used in curing ceremonies in which the gods' help for requests like harvests and healing. According to Navajo belief, a sandpainting heals because the ritual image attracts and exalts the Holy People, serving as a pathway for the mutual exchange of illness and the healing power of the Holy ones.
