The Disk of Phaistos
8x8 inches round (Tablet)
8x9 inches (Tablet + Stand)
The Phaistos Disc is a disk of fired clay from the Minoan palace of Phaistos on the island of Crete, possibly dating to the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age (second millennium B.C.). The language imprinted on the face of the mysterious disk has never been fully decoded, and its symbols are part of no known alphabet, ancient or modern. Its purpose and meaning, and even its original geographical place of manufacture, remain disputed, making it one of the most famous mysteries of archaeology. This unique object is now on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion. Even though some progress has been made crudely "reading" it, modern scholars still debate the "understanding". Unless other disks are found which would give linguists a wider range of text to study or archaeologists discover an equivalent of a Rosetta stone, we must face the likelihood that the Phaistos disk will remain a frustrating mystery which hints at, yet does not reveal, a language that has been lost to the world.
